National News Engagement Day

#EngageTheNews

Hooked up a very cool discussion for the SPJ CU Boulder (Society of Professional Journalists) celebration of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s NATIONAL NEWS ENGAGEMENT DAY on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7 with Denver Post journalist, Joe Nguyen and Documentary and Film Maker, Mike Shum!

These two professionals covered the Aurora Shooting and followed the James Holmes case! This is your time to ask the questions you always wanted answered and find out how they covered it! The floor is yours, or just come and listen!

Take a seat in the CUI News Room in the Journalism and Mass Communication Armory Building on #CUBoulder campus! ALL WELCOME! 4:00 PM!

Make sure on OCTOBER 7th that you TWEET @SPJCUBOULDER on how you interacted with the news that day, or saw others interacting! Reading the news, watching TV, social media? Let us know on twitter @SPJCUBOULDER #EngageTheNews

SPJ CU Boulder Fall 2014 Campaign: Career Conscious

Wow! Such great ambitions for the chapter this coming Fall! The first meeting was held under the new leadership and ideas were flowing. Goals were being created and the future of SPJ CU Boulder was blossoming. The chapter is very excited to announce a number of different items coming to the access of members, the CU Boulder community and anyone interested in a wide range of facets! Things like of course, journalism, but public relations, travel writing, social media and much, much more!

The meeting was small in numbers, but we decided that the main focus for Fall 2014 is to be career conscious. We will strive to create an environment that enriches our member’s career interests, knowledge and know-how! Keeping them up to date on the tools and skills necessary to get to the next level, or even land a internship. All in order to get people steadily involved in what they want to be doing with their futures and take steps towards creating a career.

We are bringing in a number of amazing speakers to talk with the members and again, anyone who wants to discover a career in media! (Stay tuned for information and dates on speakers.) We have a great support of networks for any media-related dream you want to pursue! And if we don’t, we would love to have your interests bring a new depth to the chapter!

The SPJ CU Boulder chapter is excited for all the members to participate in any way shape or form! We are excited to think about all the possibilities that are knocking at our doors and waiting to be opened!

Think any of this sounds interesting to you, or know a friend who could benefit? Take a look at joining our chapter! It is what you want it to be and can lead to a door for your future! Why wait any longer?

Welcome SPJ CU Boulder officers!

At the first SPJ CU Boulder meeting of the fall 2014 semester, four new officers were elected by acclamation:

President: Gavin B. Griffin

Vice President: Mackenzie Findeisen

Secretary: Samantha Sherwyn

Treasurer: Brandon Boland

Congratulations to the new chapter leadership, and thank you for taking on this responsibility!

The group discussed potential future events, contacts in the local media market and ways to grow the membership base. One event we have on our radar is National News Engagement Day, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, an initiative from the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication to make staying informed a national priority. Check back soon for how SPJ CU Boulder plans to participate.

Welcome Back to School: Fall 2014

Hello journalism students!

Welcome back to school for the fall 2014 semester. JMC students at CU Boulder have access to a huge network of professional organizations and people to help them navigate the changing media landscape.

The SPJ CU Boulder chapter is a great way to connect with these people and enter the industry. Recent chapter members have won professional awards for their research, writing and design, and have found jobs in media around the world. Here are two reasons to join the student chapter and get involved:

  1. Build your network. Meet other journalism students and professionals who can help connect you with jobs and people in the journalism world.
  2. Get a job. You can bring your experience participating in a national journalism organization to a job interview and show your knowledge of collaborating with others to find the most relevant issues affecting journalism students and media professionals in today’s changing landscape.

To join, you only need to be a member of the national Society of Professional Journalists. Membership dues for the national organization are $37/year or $100/four years — significantly discounted for students. It’s free to join the student chapter.

Consider serving in an SPJ CU Boulder leadership position. SPJ CU Boulder’s current leadership has graduated and EVERY POSITION is vacant. This is your chance to lead a student organization and gain experience organizing and leading — something that can’t be taught in a class, but will look excellent on your resume. Not sure or have questions about it? Email last year’s leaders.

SPJ CU Boulder meeting: Mon., March 31, 9:30 a.m.

Please join us for an SPJ CU Boulder student chapter meeting:

Monday, March 31
9:30 a.m.
Armory 205 (CUI room)

We’ll be discussing the future of the chapter, a potential student trip to an upcoming conference and any other concerns or suggestions for meetings and events. Please stop by for a free cup of coffee and to say hello, even if you can’t stay. The meeting part will last about 15 minutes, plus Q&A time, if needed.

Current SPJ members can join the student chapter for free until May 1.

RSVP to this meeting on Facebook.
