Welcome SPJ CU Boulder officers!

At the first SPJ CU Boulder meeting of the fall 2014 semester, four new officers were elected by acclamation:

President: Gavin B. Griffin

Vice President: Mackenzie Findeisen

Secretary: Samantha Sherwyn

Treasurer: Brandon Boland

Congratulations to the new chapter leadership, and thank you for taking on this responsibility!

The group discussed potential future events, contacts in the local media market and ways to grow the membership base. One event we have on our radar is National News Engagement Day, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, an initiative from the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication to make staying informed a national priority. Check back soon for how SPJ CU Boulder plans to participate.

Welcome Back to School: Fall 2014

Hello journalism students!

Welcome back to school for the fall 2014 semester. JMC students at CU Boulder have access to a huge network of professional organizations and people to help them navigate the changing media landscape.

The SPJ CU Boulder chapter is a great way to connect with these people and enter the industry. Recent chapter members have won professional awards for their research, writing and design, and have found jobs in media around the world. Here are two reasons to join the student chapter and get involved:

  1. Build your network. Meet other journalism students and professionals who can help connect you with jobs and people in the journalism world.
  2. Get a job. You can bring your experience participating in a national journalism organization to a job interview and show your knowledge of collaborating with others to find the most relevant issues affecting journalism students and media professionals in today’s changing landscape.

To join, you only need to be a member of the national Society of Professional Journalists. Membership dues for the national organization are $37/year or $100/four years — significantly discounted for students. It’s free to join the student chapter.

Consider serving in an SPJ CU Boulder leadership position. SPJ CU Boulder’s current leadership has graduated and EVERY POSITION is vacant. This is your chance to lead a student organization and gain experience organizing and leading — something that can’t be taught in a class, but will look excellent on your resume. Not sure or have questions about it? Email last year’s leaders.

SPJ CU Boulder meeting: Mon., March 31, 9:30 a.m.

Please join us for an SPJ CU Boulder student chapter meeting:

Monday, March 31
9:30 a.m.
Armory 205 (CUI room)

We’ll be discussing the future of the chapter, a potential student trip to an upcoming conference and any other concerns or suggestions for meetings and events. Please stop by for a free cup of coffee and to say hello, even if you can’t stay. The meeting part will last about 15 minutes, plus Q&A time, if needed.

Current SPJ members can join the student chapter for free until May 1.

RSVP to this meeting on Facebook.

Welcome to the new student chapter

The University of Colorado Boulder has a new student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Student membership dues are FREE – waived by faculty adviser Gil Asakawa – until May 1, 2014. Join to become a member and have your name listed on our membership page.

We plan to schedule two meetings for the remainder of this semester, and discuss organizing a student trip to an upcoming regional conference. The chapter hopes to provide a resource for students entering the journalism and a voice to help influence the industry’s progress.
